I have almost twenty years of experience as an educator and writer. Though my speciality is in education, I enjoy writing on a variety of topics - and helping others find their voice on paper. I co-founded and became a steady contributor to First Person: Narratives from the Classroom for the Virginia Journal of Education. My work has also been featured in Gargoyle Magazine.
Teaching ESOL in diverse communities, I helped students reach their full potential, became an advocate for equity in education and learned to view the world from different lenses. In my role as co-chair for the Montgomery County Public Schools Special Education Citizens Advisory Committee (SECAC), I partner with administrators, families, and community groups to advocate for students with special needs. As a consultant and freelance writer, I have created and edited website content and other communications for non-profit organizations, schools, and independently owned businesses. I successfully coached students (including special education students and adult career switchers) on essays for undergraduate, honors, and graduate programs. In my roaring twenties, I lived in Seville, Spain. The experience gave me a deep understanding of language, culture, and the joy of friendship with people of different backgrounds. I enjoy traveling, (easy) hiking, and watching movies with my super supportive husband, and our two "spirited" sons. I like to spend time with friends, nerd out to podcasts, and always have a novel on the nightstand. I’m detail oriented, open-minded, flexible, and insightful - but not before a trip to the local coffee shop. |
